# Formats (/docs/formats)

Get each document as html or markdown.

- `responseOptions.format` is the one content field every document of the request gets: `html`, the default, or
  `markdown`. `GET /{url}` always serves `html`.
- `html`: the body transcoded to UTF-8, otherwise as fetched.
- `markdown`: converted from that UTF-8 html, with relative links and images made absolute against the final URL;
  `<base href>` is ignored. The 10 MiB cap applies to the markdown as served, and to the html it is converted from.
- Only `text/html` and `application/xhtml+xml` pages are stored. Any other type fails with `unsupported_content_type`,
  before its body is read; a response without Content-Type is sniffed first.
- Any other format is a 422 naming it, and so is any unknown field.
